Injury Accident in Rockcastle County Date of News Release: 12/30/2014 - On Tuesday December 30th 2014 around 4:45 A.M. Officer Dennis Jackson with the Kentucky State Police-Vehicle Enforcement responded to a two vehicle injury crash located on I-75 near the 63 mile marker in Mount Vernon Kentucky. Shempert was transported to Rockcastle Regional Hospital with minor injuries. Assisting on Scene: Mount Vernon Police, Rockcastle Co Sheriffs Department, Rockcastle Co. EMS, State Highway Department, and Rockcastle Co Emergency Management.


Folk art painting demonstrated at artisan center

On Jan. 10, Janice Harding Owens, of Mount Vernon, will demonstrate folk art painting from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea. Works by Owens are regularly available at the Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea, located at 200 Artisan Way, just off Interstate 75 at Berea, Exit 77. A special exhibit, "Put a Lid On It: Containers by Kentucky Artisans," is on display through Feb. 28. The Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea is an agency in the Tourism, Arts and Heritage Cabinet of the commonwealth of Kentucky.

Exhibits, demonstrations planned at artisan center

January's schedule is full at the Kentucky Artisan Center in Berea. The exhibit showcases containers by 48 Kentucky artisans. Donna and Donnie Smith, of Waco, will demonstrate their carved and painted gourds from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Jan. 17. The center's exhibits, shopping and travel information areas are open daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. with the cafe open from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Admission is free. The Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea is an agency in the Tourism, Arts and Heritage Cabinet of the Commonwealth of Kentucky.

Death Investigation in Rockcastle County

- On Tuesday, February 03, 2015, at approximately 7:54 AM Kentucky State Police Post 11, London was notified of a residential structure fire with a fatality on Low Gap Road in Rockcastle County. KSP Arson Investigator Detective Brian Lewis along with Detective John Barnett arrived on the scene and discovered the victim Morris Cromer, 55, of Mount Vernon deceased in the bedroom area of the residence. KSP Post 11 Arson Investigator Detective Brian Lewis and Detective Barnett are in charge of the investigation.

Jeffrey R. Phelps, 42, of Brodhead, KY charged with two counts of Trafficking in a Controlled Substance 1st Degree 1st Offense. Megan M. Alcorn, 19, of Brodhead, KY charged with Endangering the Welfare of a Minor and Marijuana Possession. Gregory A. Phelps, 20, of Brodhead, KY charged with Marijuana Possession, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia and Endangering the Welfare of a Minor. Dorothy B. Page, 66, of Orlando, KY charged with Trafficking in a Controlled Substance 1st Degree 1st Offense.

Man charged with taking bone after finding human remains waives preliminary hearing

VERNON, Ky - A man accused of taking a bone from human remains found in Rockcastle County had a court appearance Wednesday morning. Bruce Smith was supposed to be in court for a preliminary hearing on tampering with physical evidence charges. That was near Wilderness Road in Mt. Smith and his attorney waived the preliminary hearing for the tampering charge to the grand jury who will decide if there's enough evidence to indict him. State police say they are close to releasing the name of the person Smith found. Smith will be back in court June 8.

**Update** Murder Investigation in Rockcastle County

Tabatha F. Howard, 30, of Mount Vernon, KY charged with Murder, Robbery 1st Degree, Burglary 1st Degree, Tampering with Physical Evidence, Fleeing or Evading Police , Public Intoxication and Resisting Arrest. Both suspects were lodged in the Rockcastle County Detention Center, the investigation is continuing. KSP Detective John Barnett is in charge of the investigation and was assisted at the scene by KSP Detective Ryan Loudermilk, Trooper Brian Maupin, Rockcastle County Sheriff's Office and the Rockcastle County Coroner's Office.

Crash results in DUI arrest, I-74 backup

A Kentucky motorist whose car crashed after sideswiping a wall on Interstate 74 on Wednesday afternoon - causing a major backup - has been arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol. According to a state police report, Daniel Abney, 57, of Mount Vernon, Ky., was driving west on I-74 at 3:44 p.m. when he lost control of his vehicle at milepost 181, near Prospect Avenue.

Wooly worm watchers hit winter forecast

In the process of looking for something else, I just ran across a little spiral notebook containing the field notes I had accumulated in preparation for last fall's National Association of Wooly Worm Winter Weather Watchers annual forecast. This prompted me to find that actual column, from last October, and gloat a bit.


Changes afoot at Renfro Valley

During this past weekend, April 30/May 1, 2017, reports emerged that the Renfro Valley Entertainment Center had dispensed with the services of members of their house-band, led by Kimberly 'Kricket' Reynolds. On Saturday night after that evening's show, they were presented with a type-written letter by Howard Thomas of Old Barn Entertainment, stating that their services were no longer needed and asking for them to remove all of their equipment and take all personal items with them.

Two Found Dead In Rockcastle Co. Home Were Murdered

Kentucky State Police detectives say the two people found dead in a home on North Wilderness Road in Rockcastle County were shot to death. 36-year-old William H. Bryant and 35-year-old Chara L. Bryant were found dead in a home about 6:40 Thursday morning.

I-75 closure in Kentucky's Rockcastle County scheduled

Kentucky State Police say all southbound lanes and the left northbound lane of the highway in Rockcastle County will close at 10 a.m. Tuesday and reopen by 6 a.m. Wednesday. Southbound traffic will exit at Berea and detour via U.S. 25, reconnecting with I-75 in Mount Vernon.
